Threenager

I had one of those random moments today where I looked at Enzo and he seemed so much older than his 3.5 years.  My little boy did not seem so little, and a tiny part of me was reminded that someday he won’t really need me.  Okay, he’ll always “need” me on some level, but he won’t depend on me as much as he does now, and I had a glimpse of what this would be like this morning at the dentist.  Don’t get me wrong – it was incredibly helpful that I didn’t have to bounce back and forth between both kiddos since Phoebe had to be convinced to allow the hygienist to clean her teeth.  Still, though… one minute they’re dependent on you for everything and then they start to say, “I do it!” and then they are actually doing it without any assistance whatsoever.

I was really impressed with Enzo this morning as he hopped up on the table/chair/whatever and just casually started chatting and not once was he uncertain or did he need me.  I was so focused on trying to help with Phoebe that I suddenly realized I hadn’t checked on Enzo and he was just totally relaxed, watching TV while his teeth were cleaned. This of course helped a lot when it came to Phoebe as she could watch him and she always wants to do what Enzo is doing. (We ended up getting her some undies after this day in the photos when she insisted on wearing two pairs of Enzo’s underwear over her diaper. She’s a tad indecisive at times… not sure where she gets that from). 😉

On the downside, Phoebe also likes to mimic Enzo and his particular brand of preschooler cursing, so that’s fun (“No Poo Poo/Boo Boo/Bee Bee!” etc in the whiniest voice ever).  I also take no responsibility whatsoever for his new favorite exclamation “What the heck?!”  He’s also quite fond of Donald Duck’s signature phrase “Ah, phooey!” which is admittedly more child-friendly.  I’m really just more impressed that he uses these phrases at the appropriate times… so there’s that.  Now I’m curious as to what other sayings/phrases/words I overuse and which they’ll decide to point out.

In any case, they’re getting too big too fast, are sassy and are also cavity free.  We do, however, have to begin Operation Take Back the Nuk with Miss Phoebe as her teeth are becoming affected.  If you should hear something in the distance that sounds a little like someone’s heart being ripped out, fear not!  It’s probably just the soul-wrenching cry of our toddler being forced to walk around without her beloved nuk.

Things They Say

I feel like Phoebe’s vocabulary has exploded and now she’s talking in short sentences a good deal of the time.  She mimics just about everything and good grief it’s adorable.  Like when she tries to get Enzo to chase her during dinner saying, “Come get me!” in her super sweet tiny voice that doesn’t quite have the pronunciation down yet.

Some other adorable things she’s saying:

  • “Where ____ go?” For a while it was constantly “Where Aubee go?” (Aubrey is her cousin).
  • “Ee you ater.” (See you later).
  • “I got it” or “I did it”.
  • “Chocolate milk”. Her version barely sounds like chocolate, but we unfortunately introduced her to the magical stuff and she’s addicted.  Mind you, she prefers the super sweet bought from the store kind in the brown jug.  If you try to pull out the white jug and add chocolate syrup expect a wee bit of a meltdown while you try to explain you are in fact getting her chocolate milk.
  • “I farted!” The joys of having an older brother…
  • Singing the ABC song. She misses some here and there, but loves to try and recite her ABC’s.
  • And my favorite: “Uv Oo.”  (Love you).

While Enzo already has a fairly big vocabulary it’s been fun watching him add to it and also use longer sentences as well as listen to how creative he can be.  He’s also been talking more about emotions lately and we’ve been trying to encourage him to express how he’s feeling.  Unfortunately, he’s been going through an “I’m scared” stage.  Sometimes I think he’s just stalling because it comes up when it’s time to go to preschool or time to go to bed, but at times I do think he’s maybe a little anxious or nervous about things.  When he’s not feeling scared, though, he’s usually very empathetic and if someone is sad he’ll try and think of something to make them “So much happy.”

  • So much potty talk still… sigh. Especially “Poopy Butt or Pee-pee Butt.”
  • “Watch this! Watch this!” His new favorite phrase.
  • “Buitar.” He won an inflatable guitar at the fair.
  • “Why?” My least favorite word.  Ha ha.

Recent conversations:

Me: “Why are you guys yelling?”

Enzo: “Because we like you, Mommy!”

Toddler Talk

Technically Enzo isn’t really a toddler anymore, but sometimes I hate being reminded of how grown up he is by calling him a preschooler. There’s no denying it, though, and it really does just get better and better.  I love how lately he’ll latch onto a word and use it often, like the word “comfortable” or “weird.”

“I like this shirt, Mommy. It’s so comfortable.”

I can’t remember what we were doing, but he couldn’t do something or use something because, “it’s too weird.”

We have unfortunately also entered the potty talk stage, which I’m pretty sure started at preschool.  It’s not the first time he’s picked up something from there, so there’s been a lot of “poopy” this and “pee pee” that.  Joy.  We really don’t know how to make it stop… ignoring doesn’t work, and explaining that there is a time and a place doesn’t work either.

He does, however, make up for it by saying one of my new favorite phrases.  “You’re my best buddy.”  Although lately he usually says, “You’re my best doughnut.”  I can’t complain, doughnuts are pretty awesome.

As for Phoebe, she’s still working on new words every day and doing her best to communicate with us. Her animal noises are by far one of our favorites, but it’s pretty adorable when she tries to copy any and all words.  She says “Please” and “Thank you” although doesn’t understand that just because she says “please” she isn’t always going to get what she wants.  She just gets more persistent.  Her favorite things to ask for are milk, juice, strawberries (which she steals off the cutting board when I’m not looking), snack, outside, kitty, TV (oops), and a ton of other things.

What'sThat

She’s also got a few books mostly memorized and likes to join in when we’re reading to her whether it be to make noises, point her finger or “read” from memory.

It’s also really adorable when she tries to sing. She loves to dance around and attempt to sing some of her favorite songs.

I’m enjoying it all while it lasts… before they become mouthy teenagers. 😉

Mario, Where’s My Coffee!

Almost every day brings new random things with the kiddos, and along with that comes fun new phrases.  Lately Enzo’s imagination has been soaring and he’s at that fun age where you have to watch you say, not that we’ve had anything embarrassing come up… yet. So, from the mouths of the munchkins some of the latest:

TheseTwo

Enzo:

  • “Tatty Tale”  Learned at day care. I can only imagine who tattled on who.
  • “It’s too dangerous.”
  • “Mario! Where’s my coffee!”  Random line from his favorite movie right now (The Chipmunk Adventure).  Why this line?  We may never know… but he does a great impression.
  • “Absolutely not.” He used this on me last night when I told him he needed to help clean up.  Absolutely not, indeed, little man.

Pairocuties

Phoebe:

  • “Memo” (Elmo)
  • “Bubbo” (Bubbles)
  • “Bitsy” (as in Itsy Bitsy Spider)
  • “Eh-zo” (Enzo)
  • “Mine”
  • “Yeah”
  • “No-no”

Phoebe has been trying to copy everything you say, so her vocabulary is really starting to take off, which is so much fun. I think Enzo is enjoying it as well, although sometimes he gets tired of her saying his name or things like “Hi” over and over again and he will tell her to stop or say “No (insert word here).”

Ignore the garbage and mess in the above picture… sometimes we randomly give up tasks (like cleanup) halfway through in order to wrestle or perform some sort of acrobatics on the kitchen floor on a whim.  Having two talkative toddlers is sort of like having tiny dictators at times and sometimes I just give in when they’re demanding fun over responsibility.

Toddler Talk

It’s hard to keep track of everything these two kids say and do, but here are a few that stick out in my mind as of late. Also, you may notice more pictures of Phoebe than Enzo lately and in the future… he hasn’t been as interested in having his picture taken, so I respect that. Also, there are days when he’s just moving too much and it’s hard to take a picture that isn’t really blurry. 😉

From Enzo:

“Did you get a haircut?” This was before I had actually gotten a haircut, so I said “No” and he proceeded to walk around me in a very discerning manner.

“Oh, I’m sorry, Mommy.”  So cute, especially when he apologizes for things that are out of his control and he didn’t do.

“I don’t know!” (It’s the way he says this one that gets me).

“Yessir!”

And now for Josh’s personal favorite.  Enzo has a large Buzz Lightyear toy that lights up and talks and one phrase in particular is very funny to Enzo.

“Buzz Lightyear, reporting for duty!”  Hahahaha – Doodie!

Boys.

For Phoebe:

She really, really wants to talk and attempts to repeat what you say.  We can often make out what she’s saying… but not necessarily everyone else can. You can definitely make out “All Done” and “Peese” (with accompanying sign language), though.

She points to herself and says, “BeeBee” as well as uses a lot of gestures to point to things she wants and shakes her head yes or no, especially if I don’t pick the right book to read. She also points to us and says “Mama” and “Daddy.”

She has also been trying to sing Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star with me, which is pretty adorable.
